Participants

This Conference brought together countries with proven experience deploying NPCs to expand access to EmOC with countries that were either just beginning this process or had significant interest in utilising NPCs.  The Conference hosted government officials, non-physician clinicians, clinical training institutions, development partners and researchers from 24 African countries which enabled the exchange of information, experiences and African innovations for meeting the human resource crisis for MDG 5.

The first three days of the conference (29 June – 01 July 2009) provided a platform for countries and technical experts to discuss strategies for expanding the use of NPCs for EmOC.  The final day (02 July 2009) was devoted to a Ministerial Conference, where a statement was developed which formalised participants’ commitment to human resources for maternal survival.
